Gakusei Karate Chelmsford is a family orientated club. As a style Gakusei Karate combines modern training and techniques with traditional values to create a martial art based on practical and effective self-defence skills while also maintaining the traditional values of Japanese Karate.
Karate is especially great for kids as it builds their focus and concentration as well as developing self-discipline, which improves school grades and behaviour. Children also participate in our comprehensive anti-bullying and safety awareness programs. With students starting from as young as 5, Gakusei karate is one of the exceptionally few activities that the whole family can participate in together.
We offer a 2 week free trial at all of our classes across Chelmsford. We currently run classes two days a week in both Springfield and also Great Baddow with more locations opening soon.
Most clubs heavily prioritise traditional training methods like kata and kihon (basics). This emphasis stems from kata being the primary grading criterior in their style. While kata teaches self-mastery and movement principles, its abstract nature renders it unlikely to effectively prepare beginners or intermediates for self-defense scenarios.
Conversely, other clubs focus on competing in highly stylized points fighting tournaments. While beneficial for athleticism, reflexes, and tactical thinking, this approach lacks direct applicability to self-defence situations. Points fighting can be likened to fencing in battle—it’s a sport rather than practical self-defence training.
Unfortunately, the majority of clubs are overly committed to narrow “traditionalist” syllabuses. They dedicate considerable time to techniques that may not work in reality without significant modification. This inadvertently conditions students to perform techniques incorrectly. Moreover, focusing on abstract techniques and drills neglects key aspects of self-defence, such as defending against swinging punches, grappling, and ground fighting—skills essential for common self-defence scenarios.
Regrettably, it’s rare to find a karate club that incorporates self-defence scenarios into their grading syllabuses. Consequently, rather than prioritizing confidence-building self-defence skills, many clubs overlook or completely omit them. It’s frustrating that many clubs advertise “learn self-defence” when this isn’t their primary focus.
It’s no surprise that individuals who have experienced clubs like these often conclude that “karate doesn’t work.”
So what is Gakusei Karate like?
As a much more balanced style, our priority is to teach our students practical self-defence skills that they can rely on. Our grading syllabus comprehensively covers all of the most statistically probably self-defence situations, allowing us to effectively test our student’s ability to protect themselves.
While we still incorporate kata into our training regime, we emphasize traditional kata much later in the syllabus. Our initial focus is on core techniques, practical combinations and self-defence. When we do introduce traditional kata we focus on its practical application rather than obsessing over performance and aesthetic aspects as is common in most clubs.
What sets us apart is out commitment to providing students with the flexibility to tailor their karate journey according to their interests. We offer specialist classes for sparring and self-defence, as well as advance classes for those who love the traditional arts. Whether you prefer a well rounded approach or focusing on specific aspects, you have the freedom to choose.
Our professionalism is underscored with full time support and unlike many karate clubs where instructors rely solely on past training, all of our instructors train every week. This ensures that both our teaching techniques and teaching methods remain at the forefront of the martial arts world.
